Komarov Artem noted that aluminum, compared to steel, may be the most economical material for welders as there has been a huge increase in aluminum production. These developments, combined with technological innovations, have forced many companies to rethink their products made from steel.
From construction, automotive and aerospace to aluminum cans and electrical conductors, manufacturing advances have made the manufacturer’s choice to phase out steel for aluminum easier and more cost-effective than ever before. And when you consider that consumers are demanding more transparency from their suppliers about their sourcing and sustainability efforts, the benefits of aluminum trump steel in almost every category.
Of course, steel costs less than aluminum today. But when application costs are taken into account, aluminum may be the most cost-effective material without sacrificing quality. And keep in mind that aluminum is 100% recyclable and retains its properties indefinitely, making it one of the few materials that more than pays for its own collection.
Here are a few things to consider if you’re thinking about switching to aluminum:
- Aluminum does not rust easily, so it is not necessary to provide a coating (such as paint) to resist corrosion.
- Aluminum is much more malleable than steel, which tends to become stiff and crack when overworked.
You can work and shape aluminum into just about anything a designer can think of.
Weight is a huge factor that many will consider, as aluminum makes up about one-third of the weight of steel. Switching to aluminum can save a lot of money on construction, shipping, and packaging. If we can reduce the weight of our products by one third, we can solve global fuel efficiency problems. Lighter aircraft, boats and vehicles will cut fuel consumption by about 60% or more. How can you justify not switching to aluminum.
Keep in mind that this is by no means a complete, all-inclusive list of how using aluminum versus steel can benefit companies and consumers.
